Overview

Quark Digital Systems Inc.  manufactures a number of digital security system devices, specializing in video motion detection (VMD) systems for CCTV systems. The security system market is currently a $6 billion industry in North America and this much again in both Europe and Asia. The majority of these security sales are in the form of CCTV systems; video camera systems. These are located everywhere from a small corner store to apartment buildings, shopping centers and industrial, institutional, military and government installations. CCTV is leading technology offering instant identification of an alarm - the user can see what is happening and decide what response to make.

The problem with most CCTV currently in operation is that it requires someone to watch the cameras. The security person doing this is usually assigned other tasks to perform, such as issuing parking or visitor passes in the case of a condominium. They cannot watch all the cameras all the time. Something will invariably be missed. The CCTV system is then only useful as a deterrent to crime and in most cases ineffective in apprehending unauthorized persons on the spot.

Quark’s VMDs address this problem. The proprietary VMDs actually watch the video security cameras. It never gets tired and never blinks.

Quark’s systems are also designed to upgrade older systems. There are approximately 40,000 units older than five years in Canada, the United States and Europe. The retrofit industry offers a potential of ~$50 million. New installations offer several times this.

Quark’s VMD system integrates with our new ‘LOLITA’ system - Low Light Amplifier. This exceptional device takes the normal video from a security camera and enhances it 16x to show great detail when normally nothing can be seen because of inadequate lighting. Our LOLITA is far superior to any competitive product on the market.

All of the above devices integrate with the Quark Systems CondoSecure condominium alarm. This was our main product through the 1980’s and Quark is a leader in reliable remote digital communication over standard copper wire. Over 80,000 units have been installed in individual apartments in the past.

The Company History

Quark began in 1979 as Accu-Cable Systems Ltd. installing television cable systems. Through the early 1980s the company, operating as Quark Digital Systems, began development of the ‘Quark System’ condominium security system. Quark began an installation department and successfully sold its system to approximately 75% of all new construction condominiums built during the late 1980s in the Toronto area. Its customers included all the major development firms, such as Bramalea Limited, Tridel, Menkes and H&R Developments. Over 10,000 condominium suites are currently monitored by the Quark System "CondoSecure" in Toronto alone.

In the early 1990s, Quark chose to sell it's installation division and concentrate on developing new products. The decision was made in 1993 to become strictly a manufacturer. After heavy investment in Video Motion Detection the Q-Line VMD system is ready for mass distribution. In 1998 the CondoSecure system also received a major upgrade in technology and now stands ready to dominate the world's market for condominium security systems.
